Angels in Art, Original Angel Art, a website of original angel watercolors, angel prints, angel pictures, angel greeting cards and angel coloring pages by Mary Anne Carley. I grew up in Armonk, NY and started my art training at boarding school, St. Mary's Hall in Burlington, NJ, at of age of 12. Later I majored in art at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY and at Skidmore College and in commercial art at Finch College, N.Y.C.
I withdrew from Finch before graduation to be married, and to move to Sharon, CT. It was through my husband I met well-known American artist Hal MacIntosh. Mr. MacIntosh encouraged me to finish my education and to get back to painting. So, despite of having three children in quick succession, I attended the Hartford School of Art and earned my bachelors degree.
I then taught art at the Litchfield Connecticut Junior High School and completed my Masters Degree at Central Connecticut College. During the 1960s and 1970s I exhibited my work in numerous shows, including a juried American Watercolor Society show at the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford, CT. My art took a back seat to a traditional catalog business my husband and I started in the mid 1970s until 1994 when the Reverend Mitzi Noble, formerly of Trinity Episcopal Church in Lime Rock, CT, asked me to create bulletin covers for Sunday services. This bit of encouragement led me back to painting.
I exhibit and sell at the Annual Invitational Art Show held over the Labor Day weekend at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lime Rock, CT.
One recent highlight of my career was a show entitled Three Generations of Carley's held with my daughter and two of my granddaughters at the Town Hall in Sharon, CT.
Another highlight was to have my Blue Angel painting reproduced for the cover of the CD Laura's Song written by Claudia Grispin, owner, choreographer, voice and piano instructor at the MusicGarden in Mahopac, N.Y.
I have exhibited my work at the Torrington Chamber of Commerce, the Salisbury Bank and Trust Company, Lakeville, CT, at the National Iron Bank in Cornwall Bridge, CT, at Creative Hand in Salisbury, CT, at the Artwell Gallery in Torrington, CT and at the Sharon Historical Society in Sharon, CT..
A black and white line drawing of the Transfiguration is permanently on display on the Episcopal Church and the Visual Arts, a National Website, depicting the collect for the last Sunday in Epiphany 2003.
And I recently had accepted, also by the Episcopal Church and the Visual Arts, two pieces, Bands of Cloth and She Is, both with ink drawn over water mixed with powder eye shadow cosmetics, and both shown at the Episcopal National Convention, June 13, 2006.
I paint mostly on rice paper with watercolor, painting the background first. I then overdraw the figures, etc. with various pens making intricate line work. Many of the backgrounds have been painted from life from my garden in Sharon, CT.
I designed this website because many people like angels. I feel my work to be unusual, of the highest quality and unlike anything else I have seen on the Internet. If you are interested in seeing any of my other non-angel paintings, please contact me.
